This book offers a comprehensive, start-to-finish guide to construction industry adjudication, viewed through the lens of the adjudicator. It addresses every stage of the process—from the initial appointment and case management to conducting the proceedings, issuing the Decision, and handling post-Decision matters. It is designed to serve as a practical resource for both aspiring and experienced adjudicators, in the UK and internationally.
Since its introduction in the UK in 1998, adjudication has become the preferred method for resolving disputes in the construction industry. Its growing popularity has extended beyond the UK to other jurisdictions and international projects. Over time, adjudication has developed into a complex process that demands a high level of expertise from adjudicators, who often operate under significant time pressures. This can lead to unique challenges and potential pitfalls for those unprepared. While existing texts typically explore adjudication from the perspective of parties involved in disputes, this guide uniquely focuses on the role and responsibilities of the adjudicator.

Jonathan and Matt both began their careers as quantity surveyors before transitioning into law. They are highly experienced in dispute resolution, having been appointed in nearly 1,500 construction and engineering disputes collectively. Their experience spans a wide range of project types, including education, social and private housing, commercial offices, hotels and leisure developments, sports facilities, transport infrastructure, utilities, energy, and process engineering.
